Abstract

17,573. Merryweather, J. C. Aug. 21. Pumps combined with motor road vehicles. - Relates to automobiles on which a pump is carried and driven by the propelling motor by means of a tail shaft projecting through the change-speed gearbox as described in Specification No. 529, A.D. 1908, and comprises means for driving the tail shaft at two different speeds. The first motion shaft A of the change-speed gear carries a sliding sleeve B having formed on it wheels C, D and also a jaw clutch member E adapted to engage with a similar member F carried by the tail shaft and forming part of a gear wheel H, which is constantly in mesh with a gear wheel J carried by a loose sleeve K on the second-motion shaft L. The sleeve K also carries a larger gear wheel M. When the sleeve B is moved so that the clutch E, F is engaged, the pump is driven directly at a high speed. When the sleeve is moved so that the wheels C and N mesh, the tail shaft is driven through the pinions J, H at a slower speed. The wheel C may be used in conjunction with the wheel N, or another wheel may be mounted on the sleeve B to form part of the change-speed gear of the vehicle. In this method, one controlling- lever serves to operate both the change-speed gear for the vehicle and the driving-gear for the pump. A second method shown in Fig. 2 comprises a loose sleeve mounted on the shaft L carrying a jaw clutch R, and also a gear wheel J always in mesh with the wheel H. The shaft L also carries a sliding sleeve S provided with clutch members T, V, one of which is adapted to engage the clutch member R and the other to engage with a clutch member formed on a sleeve V fixed to the shaft L and carrying one or more change-speed gear wheels W. The sleeve S also carries a gear wheel X. In this method, two control levers are used, one for operating each of the sleeves S, B. Assuming that both sleeves are moved so that the wheel C remains in mesh with the wheel X, if the sleeve S be clutched to the member V, the car is driven at its highest speed, while if the sleeve 8 is clutched to the sleeve K the pump is driven at its lowest speed. If then the sleeve B be clutched to the wheel H and the sleeve S moved out of engagement with it, the pump is driven directly. The invention as described shows the pump driven directly at the highest speed, but the wheels could be proportione d so as to drive at the low speed when driving direct.
