[Cognate Applications, 26,897/10, 645/11, and 6676/11.] Clutches, friction; variable-speed gearing.- Gearing for motor-cycles, tri-cars, &c. comprises a countershaft such as 1, Fig. 1, mounted within and encircled around its solid part by the main carrier bracket 3 of the vehicle frame, the said shaft having at one end a projecting hollow part 6 carrying loose gear members 8, 9, and at its other end 5 a fixed gear member 4. The members 8, 9, which may be chain-wheels, are adapted to be driven alternatively at different speeds from a motor shaft parallel to the shaft 1, the member 4 transmitting the power to the driving road wheel &c. Within the part 6 their slides a double wedge 7 adapted to expand alternatively clutch rings 10, 11 into engagement respectively with the wheels 9, 8. Connexion between the wedge 7 and the rings 10, 11 is established by way of studs 17 and spring rings &c. 18, Fig. 3. The wedge 7 has a number of acting facets 21, which are used in turn as they get worn. The wedge 7 is operated by a non-rotary spindle 22 actuated through a rack 23 and pinion 24. End thrust upon the spindle 22 is taken up by bearings 29 supported by an arm 32, which has an eccentric connexion with an arm 36.
