Motor road vehicles.- Variable-speed gearing of the class that can work alternatively as an epicyclic train and as a countershaft gear is combined with a pair of driving-clutches having one actuating - spring. T h e driving-shafts a carries a fly-wheel c having two clutch surfaces d, e. Longitudinally - movable clutch members g, hare secured respectively to an intermediate shaft i and to a sleeve j loose on the shaft i. A spring k tends to keep both clutches in engagement. Wheels 3, 4, 5, secured together, rotate loosely upon a spindle 7 carried by a rotatable casing o. The wheel 3 meshes with a wheel 8 secured to a driven shaft 9 ; the wheel 4 meshes with a pinion q secured to the shaft i ; and the wheel 5 meshes with a wheel 10 fast on the sleeve j. The member h may be thrust out of engagement by a thrust collar m. The member g is disengaged through a collar s, a rod r, a second collarp, and the shaft i. With both clutches in action, a solid high-speed drive is produced. By holding the casing o by a brake u and releasing one or other of the clutches g, h, the second and third forward speeds, respectively, are effected. The gear works epicyclically to produce a reversed drive. The clutch g for this purpose engages the surface d, the casing o is set free, and the member h, disengaged from the surface e, is thrust to the right until its motion is arrested by a fixed brake-member v. According to the Provisonal specification, the gear is applicable to motor road vehicles.
