Abstract

25,762. Connor, J. H., [Mayo, B. F.]. Nov. 28. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to variable-speed and reversing driving-mechanism of the class in which auxiliary friction gearing is employed to prevent shocks when revolving gear or clutch teeth are intermeshed, and comprises an arrangement in which intermediate friction gearing is moved transversely relatively to driving and driven shafts. In Fig. 2, the driving-shaft a and driven shaft A are in line, and a countershaft i is parallel thereto. A block B sliding on a square part of the shaft A carries clutch teeth E and gear wheels D, C, through which a direct drive from the shaft a, and two reduced speeds through the shaft i, are obtainable. The wheel C is also used in reversed driving. When the wheel D is to be engaged with its corresponding countershaft wheel G, friction wheels J, K fast on the shafts A, i, respectively, are temporarily connected by a pair of friction pinions L, Fig. 4. The pinions L, which are geared together by toothed pinions N, are carried by a yoke m pivoted at its middle upon a rocking pivoted frame M. The friction-gear connexion is brought about by a tappet R or by a tappet S upon a forked rod g, which operates the block B, according to which direction the block B is being moved. The frame M for this purpose carries two pivoted blocks o, p with surfaces inclined in opposite directions adapted to be thrust downwards by inclines on the tappets R, S, respectively. The block o or p that is not required in any one operation folds backwards out of the way. A similar arrangement with friction wheels T, U is provided for the gear train C, H. In preparation for the reversed drive, the wheels T, U are connected by a single pinion 27, Fig. 2. For facilitating engagement of the clutch E, a drum Y is employed fast upon a rotary spindle u. The spindle u is slidable in bearings 20, 21 upon a pivoted yoke v, and suitable springs 26, w are provided. The yoke Y has a frusto-conical friction surface y and a like surface z of reduced diameter adapted to co operate with surfaces e and F respectively on the shaft a and block B.
