Abstract

16,289. Lloyd, W. J., and Priest, W. Aug. 10. Motor road vehicles. - Relates to variable-speed and reversing pintoothed gearing for motor road vehicles and other motorpropelled bodies such as motorboats. Figs. 1 and 2 show a side elevation and plan respectively of the gearing applied to a motor road vehicle. The driving- shaft a, arranged longitudinally i n line with the motor shaft, is of square section, and carries two gear - wheels B, b having roller teeth, the wheels being connected, so as to move together when changing gear, by'depending arms c and a sleeve d sliding on a fixed rod e, and operated from the handlever n by the rod 3. The gearwheels B, b engage projecting pins arranged in concentric circles on the face of the driven disk g, the pins having on them rollers of the kind described in Specification No. 6435, A.D. 1897, [Abridgment Class Mechanism &c.]. The gear-wheel B gives four forward speeds, and the gear wheel b gives a single reverse speed by engaging with the outer circle of pins. The disk g is mounted on the driven shaft f, which is moved longitudinally when changing gear, so as to withdraw the disk g and allow the sliding movement of the gear-wheels B, b. This disconnecting movement of the shaft f is effected against the action of a spring by togglelinks z, a shaft u, and a foot-pedal r. The shaft f is squared, and passes through a hollow shaft having upon it a chain-wheel h and a brake drum i, the hollow shaft being mounted in bearings so that it cannot move longitudinally.
