Abstract

891. Mahout, L. E. Jan. 28, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Motor road vehicles.-Relates primarily to continuouslyvariable speed cone and belt driving-gear, particularly applicable to automobiles, and comprises also improvements in clutches, means for braking the vehicle, reversing gearing and two - speed toothed gearing. Fig. 1 shows a plan of a vehicle embodying the improvements. The motor f drives the belt cone a through a clutch combined with the fly-wheel e and adapted to act as a friction clutch while starting and afterwards as a positive clutch. The clutch cone c is keyed on the driven shaft carrying the belt cone a, and slides longitudinally so as to engage either an internal conical surface in the fly-wheel or dog teeth h. The clutch cone is adjusted from the shaft m by a foot-pedal nor hand-lever o. The crossed belt r is made of trapezoidal section, and the belt cones a, p are not situated exactly opposite one another, but out of line, the rear cone p being adjustable along its shaft q. The shaft q may be totally disconnected from the differential gearing s, or geared therewith at either of two speeds by toothed wheels r<1>, s<1>, r<2>, s<2>, so as to give two ranges of speed to the belt gearing. The vehicle is braked, stopped, and then reversed by gradually moving the belt on to a conical pulley u forming a prolongation of the cone p. The pulley u is formed with internal teeth which drive a pinion w on the shaft q in the reverse direction through pinions v mounted on fixed axes.
