Abstract

6859. Phillips, R. E., [Moore, S. Bramley-]. March 31. Motor road vehicles. - Relates to step-by-step change-speed and reversing toothed gearing in which the driving and driven shafts are placed in line and connected directly or through the medium of a parallel countershaft, the object being to obtain a large number of speeds with a small number of gear-wheels. In each of the two forms shown, one of the wheels is mounted loosely on or between the ends of the driving and driven shafts and is capable of being clutched to either. In the form of gear shown in Fig. 1, for giving six forward and three reverse speeds, the abutting ends of the driving-shaft V and driven shaft W engage, and one of them supports the freelyrotated toothed wheel M. The countershaft Z carries, fixed to it, four wheels A, B, C, D, of which B, D gear continually with the looselymounted wheels M, N, while A and C are engaged when required by the wheels X, Y, which rotate with, but are free to move longitudinally on, the shafts V, W respectively, and also engage by means of toothed clutches with the wheels M or N. The six forward speeds are obtained by suitable adjustment of the wheels X, Y, the direct drive at highest speed being obtained by clutching both wheels X, Y to the wheel M; the third speed is obtained through the wheels X, A, B, M, as shown in Fig. 1. The three reverse speeds are obtained by driving the wheel A through a countershaft U, Fig. 9, having wheels R, S fixed to it, the wheel S being continually in gear with the wheel A, and the wheel R engaged by the sliding wheel X. In a modification, shown in Fig. 10, giving four forward and two reverse speeds, the wheels A, B are fixed to the countershaft Z, but the wheel C is keyed to it, so as to slide into engagement with the wheel R on the reversing-countershaft U, shown in Fig. 14. The wheels X, M, Y are loosely mounted, and are clutched to the driving or driven shafts, when required, by the clutches P, Q. In order to avoid the countershaft rotating idly at the direct drive, the wheel M may be mounted loosely on a loose sleeve 0, as shown in Fig. 16, the two wheels X, Y being clutched together through the medium of the sleeve, leaving the wheel M loose, or either may be clutched separately to the wheel M.
