Abstract

12,156. O'Neil, R. S., and Perry, L. I. May 24. Variable-speed and reversing gearing. - Relates to changespeed and reversing gearing for motor-cars &c. of the facewheel type in which the driving and driven shafts are arranged in line. The driving-shaft a carries bevel-wheels b, t serving to rotate cross-shafts d, d' which are adapted to drive a facewheel upon the driven shaft m in forward and reverse directions respectively. The shaft d carries loose bevel-wheels e, f, g meshing with toothed rings i, j, k upon a wheel l respectively. The shaft d' has a loose wheel h meshing with the ring k. The wheels e, f are separately clutched to the shaft d by a double clutch-member o actuated through suitable cam-mechanism and a rod s by a handle s<1>. The wheels g, h are clutched to their shafts, one at a time, by clutch members p, q actuated through a rod r and handle r<1>. To effect a direct drive, the wheel is caused to slide on a feather away from the bevel-wheels e &c. by suitable mechanism, and a clutch member b<1> sliding on the shaft a is brought into engagement with a similar member on the wheel b.
