Abstract
537. Parant, J. R. March 12, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Variable-speed and reversing gearing.-In changespeed gearing, applicable to motor-cars, the driving-shaft 3 is not divided, but extends through the boss of a driven wheel 10 and is supported at its ends in bearings 5, 6 in a suitable casing. A countershaft 4 is similarly supported at its ends in bearings 7, 8. The wheel 10 and a spur wheel 36 supported externally by bearings 11, 35 are formed internally with clutch-members 42, 38. A sleeve 40, which slides and rotates loosely upon the shaft 3, carries a clutch-member 41 always engaging the member 42. and other members 49, 39 adapted to engage a member 48 on the shaft 3 and the member 38 to produce direct and geared drives respectively. The sleeve 40 is operated by forks and links from a lever 47 outside the casing. The shafts 3, 4 have squared portions passing through the bosses of gears 22, 23. 24. 25, 26, 27, which are supported externally and are provided with internal clutch-members 30. Sleeves 20, 21, carrying clutch heads 31, are adapted to be operated simultaneously by a double fork 32 and lever 33, so as to bring pairs of these gears into action for the lower forward speeds, the drive passing back through the gears 37, 36. The reverse is effected by sliding a double pinion 51, 52 into mesh with wheels 53, 54 upon the shafts 3, 4, respectively, by means of a lever.56.
