Abstract

2891. Roberts, H. D., and Salmond, H. Feb. 6. Driving machines.-A variable - speed gear in which the speed variation is effected by a toothed gear sliding on a countershaft is combined with change-speed gearing comprising loose sleeves on a main shaft. The invention is specially adapted for driving machine tools and is regarded as an improvement on the invention described in Specification 1796/08, [Class 80, Mechanism &c.]. On the main shaft a, Fig. 1, is a loose sleeve b, which is driven from a belt pulley e and carries toothed gears c, d. A second sleeve f is driven from a belt pulley h and carries a pinion g. The gears c, g mesh constantly with a double gear t, q loose upon the countershaft n and connected thereto by a ratchet clutch s. A gear m similar to the gear d is secured to the shaft a. A pinion z secured to the shaft n is constantly in mesh with a wheel j connected to the shaft a by a ratchet clutch k. A double pinion u sliding on a feather v on the shaft n effects the speed changes. If the belt is on the pulley e, Fig. 1, the drive passes from the sleeve b to the gear t, through the shaft n, and from the pinion z and wheel j to the shaft a. If the pinion u is moved one step to the left, the drive passes through it to the gear m and shaft a, the clutch k overrunning. Further movement causes the gears d, m to be locked together by the teeth of the pinion u. The clutches k, s both overrun. Another movement of the pinion u disengages it from the gear m, and the drive passes from the gear d to the gear u, and from the pinion z to the wheel j and clutch k. A further range of four speeds is obtained by shifting the belt to the pulley h. The pulley 7 is loose. In the modified arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the driving - belt is not shifted, and the second range of speeds is effected by moving a double clutch 13 sliding on the sleeve b. In other modifications, further change-speed arrangements are provided on the right of the pinion u to connect the shafts n, a.
