Abstract
107,108. Stuchfield, T. P. Aug. 10, 1916. Variable-speed toothed gearing.-In variablespeed gearing for use on the countershafts of motor-cycles and the like, four wheels, alternately fast and loose on a lay-shaft, gear with a wheel on a hollow sleeve and with wheels alternately fast and loose on a shaft carrying the sleeve, the four speeds being obtained by the use of clutches arranged on the sides of the gear-wheels. The driving or driven shaft 1 carries a clutch (not shown) which is actuated by a rod 23 and lever 25, and carries loosely a spur-wheel 6 secured to the driven or driving sprocket 32. Wheels 10, 9, 8, 7, alternately fast and loose on a lay-shaft 2, gear respectively with the wheel 6 and with wheels 5, 4, 3, alternately fast and loose on the shaft 1. The wheels 5, 4 are moved together to clutch the wheel 5 to the wheel 6 for high speed solid drive and to clutch the wheels 3, 4 for second speed. The wheels 9, 8 are similarly moved for third and first speeds. The wheels are operated by double forks 11, 12 sliding on rods 13, 14 and operated by levers 15, 16 on a sleeve 17 and a shaft 18, which carry levers 19, 20 operated from a selector gate by rods 21, 22. A kick starter 27, 28 may be provided.
