20,767. Hitchon, A. Oct. 17. Toothed gearing.-Relates to variable-speed gear- ing with sliding-wheels. The driving-pinion is made wide in order that it may on the high gear engage with all the wheels on the countershaft ; these drive by means of one-way clutches, so that only the highest gear is effective. When the pinion is moved endways, to disengage the high-speed wheels, the clutch of the next speed automatically comes into action, and so on from one speed to another. Figs. 1 and 2 show an arrangement in which pinions C<2>, C<4>, on a sleeve capable of sliding on the driving-shaft A, gear with wheels J, K, mounted, by means of one-way clutches, on a countershaft geared to a wheel B on the sleeve B'. In the position shown, the sleeve and the wheel B are directly clutched together, and the gearing is non-effective ; when the sleeve is moved endways, the wheels C<4>, K take up the driving ; further movement of the sleeve takes the wheel C<4> clear of the wheel K, and the wheels C<2>, J then become active ; still further movement of the sleeve takes the wheel C<2> clear of the wheel J, and the trans- mission is stopped. By moving the sleeve still further, a pinion C<5> formed thereon engages with an intermediate wheel M in gear with a wheel G<2> on the countershaft, which is then driven in the opposite direction. A number of countershafts may be arranged round the driving-shaft.
