Abstract

13,879. Brimson, J. H. June 8. Variable-speed toothed gearing, suitable for motor-vehicles, comprises keys 22 with clutch teeth 24, 25, Fig. 12, of different lengths sliding on a stepped cone 8, Fig. 1, on a driven shaft 1 in combination with ratchet clutches in the bosses of gears 13, 14 on a countershaft 2.. The shaft 2 is driven through gears 12, 4 from a driving-sleeve 5. Gears 9, 10 loose on the drum 8 mesh constantly with the gears 13, 14, and a loose gear 11 is connected through idlers 16, for reversing, to a gear 15 fast on the shaft 2. These loose gears have slots 26, Fig. 5, for receiving the clutch teeth with inclines 28 to facilitate engagement. A direct high - speed drive is effected when the ends of the keys 22 engage clutch recesses 27, in Fig. 12, in the face of the gear 4. The keys 22 are adapted to bo moved together by striking-means 29, Fig. 1, and as they are moved to the left, the teeth 24 can at once engage the second-speed gear 9, the gear 13 overrunning until picked up by the ratchet on its shaft 2. On further movement of the keys 22, the gear 11 is in like manner engaged for a third or lowest speed.
