Abstract

335,761. Alltree, A. Oct. 22, 1929. Variable-speed gearing. - Comprises four or three-speed and reversing countershaft gearing with a direct clutch drive, helical clutch gearing for both or the only middle speed, and a sliding- gear spur pair for the lowest speed, and is a development of the arrangement of Specification 201,594, [Class 38 (v), Electric switches &c.]. The driven shaft b, Fig. 1, and/or the countershaft l are formed with splines from end to end and are in two main diameters b<1>, b<3> and l<1>, l<3> with thrust rings b<4>, l<4> splined at the junction of the two diameters supporting bearing sleeves b<2>, l<2> for the loose helical gears e, n. The splines are deeper at b<1>, l<1> when the diameter is greater. In Fig. 1, a double splined clutch c engages driving-shaft a direct, or gear e for upper middle speed. Gears f, g are splined to shaft b, so that lower middle speed is entrained by clutch m<1> with teeth in line with spur teeth of gear m, which engages spur gear g for lowest speed. An idler meshing with gear m may be slid into mesh with gear g for reversed driving and may be operated from the selector device through which the strikers of elements c, m are controlled. In one modified four-speed gear, the spur pair g, m is arranged between the helical pairs e, o and #, m. In a second modified four-speed gear, both the sliding elements c, m are arranged on the driven shaft b. In a third modified four-speed gear, the lower middle speed as well as the lowest speed is effected by enmeshment of spur gears. A three-speed form is shown in Fig. 8, the sliding elements being c, m as before. Reversal is effected by sliding a pair of idlers into mesh with spur gears q, g. In a modified three-speed form, the gear g is slidable on shaft b. The bearing b<2> may be lubricated by a scoop z, Fig. 4. attached to the adjacent wheel g. The scoop picks up oil and drives it in through a hole e<3> in the projecting boss e<2> of the loose gear e.
