Variable-speed gearing.-Constant-mesh, countershaft, toothed, change-speed gearing is arranged so that when aligned driving and driven shafts a, b are connected by a clutch e, f for direct driving, the gearing .is at rest. The countershaft c carries fixed gears i, c<2>, c<1>, cr meshing respectively with a pinion d loose on the shaft a, with forward-driving gears b<2>, b<1> loose on the shaft b, and with an idler j meshing in turn with a reverse-driving gear br also loose on the shaft b. Double-helical gearing may be used. The clutch member or sleeve e is double and slides on the shaft a to engage the member f, or alternatively, the pinion d for driving the sha.ft c. The gears b<2>, b<1>, br are alternatively clutched to their shaft by sliding dog clutches g, h. The invention is suitable for motor-vehicles.
