Variable-speed gearing comprises joined gears 2, 2<1>, slidably splined on the driven shaft 1 and joined gears 4, 4<1> slidably splined on lay shaft 5. When the four gears are moved together to the left so that a clutch 6 on pinion 9 on driving- shaft 8 is engaged, a direct drive is effected. When the four gears are moved together to the right so that a clutch 7 on a loose gear 12 is engaged, a fourth speed is obtained through train 9 - - 12. When the gears 4, 4<11> only are moved to left and right, two intermediate speeds are effected. The gear box is thus shortened. The control lever 3 may engage two or one selector forks or fork alternatively. In another arrangement, which is stated to yield six speeds, there is added to a three-speed gear a pair of gears imparting an overdrive to the lay shaft.
