Abstract
119,758. Alltree, A. Dec. 17, 1917. Variable-speed toothed gearing. - four-speed gearing for motor-cycles &c. has four toothed wheels on the alined driving and driven shafts gearing with corresponding wheels on a lay-shaft, the required speeds being obtained by sliding the pairs of intermediate interengaging wheels into engagement with clutches on the driving and driven wheels and the lay shaft. The driving- shaft 1 carries a fast wheel 3, and the driven sleeve 4 carries a loose wheel 7 and a pair of slidable intermediate wheels 5, 6. The lay-shaft 9 carries corresponding fast wheels 10, 11 and loose wheels 12, 13. The wheels 5, 12 and 6, 13 are separately connected together by forks 14<x>, 14 to slide under the influence of rods 19, 21 to engage clutches on the shaft 1 and wheel 7 for solid drive and low speed, respectively, or to engage clutch teeth 9<c> on the shaft 9 for the two intermediate speeds. Gate control, such as is described in Specification 108,923, is used. The shaft 1 may be the driven member and carry the wheels 5, 6, 7, the wheel 3 being fast on the driving sleeve 4. One pair of intermediate wheels may be dispensed with, three speeds being obtainable. The clutch parts may be formed either on the shafts or on the wheels turning therewith. A ratchet kick-starter 18 is provided.
