Abstract
110,054. Alltree, A. Nov. 30, 1916. Variable-speed toothed gearing.-In a fourspeed gear for motor-cycles &c. of the countershaft type comprising eight gear wheels, the middle pair of wheels 5, 6 on a driven sleeve 4 and the middle pair 12, 13 on the countershaft are always in mesh and are moved together laterally by a double fork member 14 to cause the engagement of clutch teeth 5<a> &c. with clutch teeth 3<a>, 7a, 9<a>, 9<b> on gear wheels 3, 7 and on the countershaft respectively. The wheels 5, 6 are in one piece but the wheel 12, 13 are separate and have separate grooves 12b, 13b for the fork member. A direct drive at the highest speed is obtained by clutching the wheel 5 to the wheel 3 fast on the driving- shaft 1, the two next speeds by clutching the wheels 12, 13 to the countershaft, and the lowest by clutching the wheel 6 to a wheel 7 loosely mounted on the sleeve 4. A kick starter 17, 18 is mounted on the projecting end of the countershaft. In a modification, the wheels 5, 6 are splined on to the shaft 1 and the sleeve 4 is short, carrying only the wheels 7, 8; the wheel 7 is fast and the wheel 3 is loose. In another modification, the short sleeve 4 is the driving member and the shaft 1 the driven member; the clutch teeth 9<a>, 9<b> are replaced by a single row of teeth midway between and alternatively engaged by the wheels 12, 13, and the chain wheels 2, 8 are placed one at each side of the gear box.
