Abstract

116,456. Malkin, B. A. Nov. 8, 1917. Variable-speed toothed and chain gearing.- Gearing applicable to motor-cycles and light motorvehicles, and providing four forward speeds one of which is a direct drive, comprises three pairs of wheels A, B, C, D, E, F. The wheel A is keyed on the driving-shaft, and the wheel E, which is loose on the driving-shaft, is connected to the driven member P. The wheels C, B, D, F are loose on their shafts, and the wheel C may be connected by clutches K, L to either or both of the wheels A, E, whilst D may be connected by clutches M, N to either or both of the wheels B, F. The direct drive is obtained by clutching C to both A and E and leaving B, D, F free, and the three geared speeds are obtained by variously clutching the wheels together. The clutches may be operated in any suitable manner, friction clutches may be used, sprocket wheels and chains may replace the pairs of spur-wheels, the drives may be transmitted from the wheel E by a universal joint or coupling, and any suitable form of reverse may be employed.
