Abstract
24,161. Griffin, H. C., and Ware, E. Oct. 18. Variable-speed gearing; clutches. - Variablespeed gearing of the kind that is operated by a centrally-disposed longitudinally-movable double cone member is modified so that the speeds are brought in gradually, as they would be by a friction clutch, while the advantage of the positive-locking action of a claw clutch is retained. The bosses of the gear wheels such as e, Fig. 3, are formed internally with a slight eccentricity corresponding to the shape of dogs d, which are thrust out by the cone member f so as to grip the gears at first in such a manner as to allow slip, and finally positively. In a two-speed gear suitable for motor-cycles shown in Fig. 1, a driving-shaft b is adapted to be clutched, for the high speed, to a gear e, which is rigidly connected through a sleeve e<2> to a beltpulley c. For the low speed, a gear e' is clutched to the shaft b, and the gear e is driven through a countershaft n. Pairs of dogs d, d' are adapted to be thrust out to engage eccentric bores m, m<1> in the gears e, e<1>, respectively, by the double member f, which is normally kept thrust to the right by a spring j. The member f is thrust to the left by a ball f<1> and spring plunger h<2> when a slotted cap i is turned by means of a pedal k or Bowden wire i<4>, Fig. 2. Means k<1> is provided for locking the cap i in the low-speed position. When the member f is in its middle position, the engine may be started by means of a toothed pinion o, Fig. 1, connected to the end of the shaft b by ratchet teeth o<1>, and kept pressed to the left by a spring j'. The pinion o is driven backwards and forwards by a toothed wheel or sector p, Fig. 2, worked by a lever p<1>. In a three-speed arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the gear e<1> is formed with two rings of teeth q, q<1>, which mesh with gears r, n<2>. The gears r, n<2> may be rotatively connected alternatively to the gear n', which drives the gear e, the shaft n being longitudinally slidable for this purpose. Chain gearing may be used instead of spur gearing in the two-speed and three-speed gears.
