Abstract

163,061. Last, J. Nov. 11, 1919. Variable-speed gearing.-One or more epicyclic trains are combined with variable-speed ratchet gearing of the kind shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This comprises coaxially arranged driving and driven disc members a, b with a rotary member c between them adapted to be adjusted to various eccentric positions. Blocks d sliding in radial slots a<1>, b<1> in the discs are secured to ratchet grips e in annular grooves c<1> in the member c. As the member c is moved from its concentric position, as by a strap f, the speed of the driven disc rises from equality with that of the driving- disc. The combination of Fig. 3, which is suit. able for motor-vehicles, yields ratios varying from zero forwards and backwards. The carrier 34 of planet gears 33 is secured to a driven shaft 35. The side gear 18 is loose on the driving-shaft 1 and is adapted to be driven therefrom through two ratchet gears A, B on series. The other side gear 21 is adapted to be driven reversely through chain gearing 6, 8, a countershaft 9, toothed gearing 10, 11 and a ratchet gear C. When the gears 18, 21 are driven equally, the shaft 35 is at rest. When the gear C is cut out by a clutch sleeve 22, the shaft 35 is driven forwards with a speed depending on the eccentricity of the middle members of the gears A, B. Reversed driving is obtained by cutting out the gears A, B by a clutch sleeve 2 and operating the gear C. A solid drive may be obtained by clutching the shafts 1, 35 together. A modification suitable for motor-cycles com. prises two epicyclic trains and one ratchet gear. A modification suitable for cranes comprises one ratchet gear controlling one epicyclic train. A modified pawl or grip for use in the ratchet gear is shown in Fig. 5. This grips the sides of the annular grooves c' by shoes r<1>, r<2> having gripping surfaces r' eccentric to the gudgeon s to which power is applied.
