Abstract

25,535. Hooke, A. E. Nov. 16. Variable - speed epicyclic gearing.-In a two-speed epicyclic gear in which one of the members may be engaged with the hub by a multiple-plate clutch to give a direct drive, or may be stationed by a friction clutch, preferably of the multiple-plate type, to give a geared drive, the operation of the clutches is provided for without rendering displacement of the planet-carrier necessary. Figs. 1 and 2 show a construction applied to the hub of a motor - cycle. The gearing comprises (1) a driving gear-wheel a attached to a carrier b forming the boss of the driving belt pulley; (2) several pairs of planetary pinions C, C' carried by the road-wheel hub h, the two pinions of any pair meshing with one another, and the smaller pinions C meshing with the driving-member a; and (3) a gear-wheel d meshing with the larger planet pinions C', and secured to a carrier e adapted to be clutched to the hub h or to a stationary member m. Bars e<1> secured to the carrier e carry a number of clutch plates f interleaved with plates g mounted in the hub h. The bars e<1> also carry a number of plates p interleaved with plates o mounted on the stationary member m. The gear is controlled by an operating-member r movable longitudinally of the axle. When the member r is in its righthand position, the springs e<2> put into engagement the clutch member connecting the bars e<1> and the hub h. When the member r is moved to the left, it first disengages the clutch through the medium of sliding keys m<3>, a ring s and a plate f<1>. Further movement of the member r causes the end plate p<1> of the stationary clutch to abut against shoulders on the bars e', thus holding the carrier e against rotation. Longitudinal movement of the operating-member r is effected by a rotary adjustment of the member r<1> having cam surfaces on its inner face. The pedal chain sprocket n<1> is secured to a sleeve n, the other end of which may drive the belt-pulley hub b through a ratchet clutch n<2>, for the purpose of starting the engine. The central fixed axle w is bored for lubrication. In a modification, the driving-member is secured to a countershaft, and the driven member consists of a shell in the form of a belt pulley or chainwheel.
