5927. Minstrel and Rea Cycle Co., and Hands, G. W. March 9. Variable speed toothed gearing; clutches, friction.-Relates to gearing of the kind in which gear-wheels on primary and secondary shafts gear with one another and are brought into action, as required, by a sliding member l having inclined parts k which operate radiallymoving clutch-operating members h, h<1>. The chain-wheel b, driven from the motor, is secured to the end of a shaft e carrying clutch members j, j<1>, which are expanded by the tapered extremities of the members h, h<1> engaging between their ends. A flat semicircular key g is also provided. The clutch drums m, m<1> are each provided with a gear-wheel meshing with wheels q<1>, q<2> on the countershaft, the drum m<1> being also connected to the driven belt pulley p. The clutch j<1> gives a direct drive from the chain-wheel b to the pulley p, and the clutch j gives an indirect drive through the countershaft.
