Abstract

236,873. Bryan, A. C., and Durston Gear Corporation. April 25, 1925. Variable-speed gearing; clutches, claw; combinations of two variable-speed gears. - Twospeed countershaft clutch gearing is designed to be used in series with other change-speed gearing such as the epicyclic gearing used in Ford cars. A toothed pinion 19 fast on the driving- shaft 8 is connected by a sleeve countershaft 23 to a wheel 20 loose on the driven shaft 16. A double claw clutch 27 splined on the shaft 16 may engage the gears 19, 20 alternatively for fast and reduced speeds. The clutch teeth are preferably circumferential, some of them 44, Fig. 4, being longer than others 45, to facilitate engagement. The clutch 27 is operated by a fork 29 secured to a sliding rod 30 controlled by a ball-mounted lever 33. The rod 30 is adapted to be held in gear positions by a spring-pressed ball 36, Fig. 2. The rod 30 is locked in neutral to prevent theft &c. by a ball 40 maintained in locking position by a rod 42. The rod 42 can be freed by a key and then turned until a recess 43 upon it releases the ball 40 from its locking position.
