Abstract

890,326. Reverse gears. VINCENT, J. W. Dec. 8, 1958 [Dec. 9, 1957], No. 38166/57. Class 80 (2). A forward-neutral-reverse gear for marine engines comprises a pair of clutches 11 selectively coupling free opposed bevel wheels 7 to an input shaft 3 journalled in a casing 1, and a bevel wheel 22 meshing both wheels 7 and fast on a vertical shaft 23 driving through bevel wheels 26, 27 an output shaft 28 journalled in a casing 25 which is adjustable about the axis of the shaft 23 for angular adjustment of the output shaft 28 relative to the input shaft 3, the axis of the shaft 28 being in a plane other than at right angles to the axis of the shaft 23. Each clutch 11 comprises a driving member 5 fast on the shaft 3 and carrying a pair of friction shoes 11 expanded into engagement, with a drum 9 welded to one of the wheels 7, by cams 13 when cam levers 17 are expanded by cones 17a axially shifted by a hand lever 21 through a shift rod 20, forks 19 and bearings 18. The Provisional Specification describes spring- loaded, axially engaged clutches.
