Abstract
158,389. Ayres, W. E. M. Nov. 7,1919. Variable-speed gea.ring.-A three-speed gear of known kind suitable for motor-cycles and comprising a gear h loose on a countershaft b is fitted with a kick starter operating through that gear. Meshing with the gear h is a pinion e fast on a shaft a driven from the engine. A gear f fast on the shaft b meshes with a gear c connected by a sleeve to a driven sprocket k. The gears c, h have clutch faces adapted to mesh with like faces upon a pair of gears d, g, which slide together on the shafts a, b. The gears d, g, normally loose, are connected as required, to produce three speeds in all, by clutch members m, i upon. the shafts. The handle n of the starter is normally turned to its out-of-gear position by a spring q, upon which the ratchet p of the starter is withdrawn from engagement with the boss o of the gear h against a spring t by a curved arm r engaging a fixed pin s.
