Abstract

152,253. Tideman, P. G. Jan. 23, 1920. Variable-speed gearing comprises two pairs of gears 4, 6 and 5, 7, Fig. 1, on a driving-shaft 2 meshing with two pairs 11, 13 and 12, 14 on a driven shaft 3, the gears 6, 7, 11, and 12 being fixed, and the others loose. The gears 4, 5 are alternatively clutched to the shaft 2 by a sliding double-ended clutch 10. A clutch 15 for alternatively connecting the gears 13, 14 to the shaft 3 has dogs 15<1> necessarily passing through the fixed gears 11, 12. The clutches 10, 15 are operated selectively from a hand-lever 28, Fig. 2, through a rod 21, which carries secured to it arms 24, 25 having pins 26, 27 adapted to engage grooves 19, 20 in the clutches. The rod 21 is moved axially to engage one ot the clutch grooves with one of the pins, the other pin such as 27 being disengaged. At the same time a non-turning block 16 slides so that a projection 18 disengages the groove 19 of the clutch to be operated, and a projection 17 engages the groove 20 of the other, so as to lock that other clutch against axial motion. In a modification in which driving and driven shafts are in line, the clutches slide on the driving-shaft and on a countershaft respectively, and each clutch has one set of dogs passing through a fixed gear to a loose gear beyond. Reversing-gear may be used in combination.
