Variable-speed gearing of the ccuntershaft type comprises a gear or pair of gears 14, Fig. 1, slidably splined directly on the driven shaft 7 between a clutch 15 for the direct drive and a clutch 16 for engaging a loose gear 10 for a countershaft drive, such as the lowest speed. Driving-shaft 2 constantly drives countershaft 6. The coupled gears 14 mesh with countershaft gears 12. 13 for intermediate speeds. In the arrangement shown, the clutches 15, 16 are connected so as to be movable together by forks 39, 40 secured to a shaft 33, Fig. 3, which slides in casing 3. This shaft 33 is formed with a jaw 36 engageable by gear-operating arm 24 depending from a control shaft 41, Fig. 4. The gears 14 are engaged by a fork 30 extending from a sleeve 27 slidable on a fixed guide-shaft 17. The sleeve 27 carries a jaw 23 in line with jaw 36. The idler 18 for reversed driving slides on guide-shaft 17 and is connected by arm 22, Fig. 3, to a third selector-jaw 32. Control-shaft 41 is moved axially to cause arm 24 to move selectively between jaws 36. 32, 23, and is turned to make the gear shift. A locking-arm 42, Fig. 4, steadied by a groove 44 in the gear case slides axially with a shaft 41. Locking-balls are provided at 25, 28, 35, Fig. 3.
