Abstract

161. Parker, C. W. Jan. 3. Variable-speed and reversing gearing. - Relates to gearing suitable for motor - vehicles, machine tools, &c. of the kind comprising alined driving and driven shafts 10, 11, Fig. 8, and in which the speed changes and the reversal are effected by the engagement of jaw clutches. A pair of gears 20, 21 secured together, are loose upon the shaft 11 and able to be connected thereto by a member 27 of a double clutch 25, which slides on a squared part of the shaft. A gear 16, fast on the shaft 10, carries clutch jaws 28, which can be engaged, to effect a direct drive, by the other member 26 of the clutch 25. The gear 16 meshes constantly with a gear 17 fast upon a countershaft 14, which also carries a fast gear 18 meshing with a gear 19 fast upon a reversing-shaft 15. The shaft 15 is, in Fig. 8, shown out of its proper position, which is such that a gear 24 upon it meshes with the gear 21. Gears 22, 23 loose upon the shaft 14 are constantly in mesh with the gears 20, 21, respectively, and carry clutch jaws 30, 32, by means of which they may be alternatively coupled to the shaft 14, to effect two reduced forward speeds. Clutch jaws 31, 33 fast on the shaft 14 are arranged to receive the jaws 30, 32, when the gears 22, 23 are slid to the right, and to the left, respectively. The gear 24, which is normally loose, can be coupled to the shaft 15, to effect reversed driving, by sliding it to the right so as to bring clutch jaws 35 upon it into engagement with jaws 34 upon the shaft. The gears 22, 23, 24 are operated through springs 45, Fig. 8, by slipper rods 37, 38, 39, Fig. 4, and the clutch 25 is operated through a spring slipper-rod 36. These rods are actuated through arms 53, 54, 55, 56 upon concentric sleeves 57, 58, 59 and a spindle 60, which are operated selectively in any suitable manner. To insure that only one of the rods 37, 38, 39 is operated along with the rod 36, an interlocking device forming the subject-matter of Specification 9947/11 may be used.
