Abstract
330,526. White, A. E., (Automotive Patent Holding Co.). March 7, 1929. Variable-speed gearing comprises an auxiliary two-speed gear B, Fig. 8, arranged between the main change and reverse gear A of a vehicle and the differential axle 13 and is characterized by flexible operative connections 52, 53 from the control of gear B to an additional shift bar 70, Fig. 5, in the control of gear A. The changes in gear A are effected by control lever 67 selectively engaging forks 62, 63 on bars 60. When fork 62 has been moved to the right of Fig. 5 to bring in direct drive, lever 67 may be moved laterally to engage fork 72 on bar 70, by sliding which gear 13 is operated. The bars 60 and 70 are interlocked by lugs 97, 98, Fig. 7, under a sliding plate 90. Bar 70 is combined with a lever 75 so as to actuate the cables 52, 53 in opposite directions. These cables, which act in tension, pass through tubes 81 to sockets 49, Figs. 2 and 4, in a lever 40. Screw means, not shown, are provided in the sockets, 49 to tension .the cables. The lever 40 pivots on an arbor 42 in gear case B and by means of lugs 50 engages a cranked pin 51 carried by a slide bar 35. Rocking of lever 40 slides bar 35 which carries a striker fork 37, Fig. 1, operating a sleeve clutch 25. The clutch 25 is in sliding connection with the shaft. 11 of the worm 12 which drives the differential, and is adapted to engage a clutch head 29 on shaft 10 for direct driving through shaft 2, Fig. 8. When clutch 25, Fig. 1, is moved to the right to engage a clutch 30, the worm 12 is driven at reduced speed through an eccentrically-supported hollow shaft 17 driven through pair 15, 16 from shaft 10, and driving through pair 20, 21.
