Abstract

Variable - speed gearing comprises two sets of toothed or chain gears a', a<2>, a<3>, Fig. 1, and b<1>, b<2>, b<3>, which are geared together in pairs. These gears are secured respectively to separate shafts A', A<2>, A' and B', B<2>, B<3>, which are arranged in two paralled lines. Clutch members C, C', C<2>, C<3>, sliding on the shafts A<2>, A<3>, B<1>, B<2> respectively, are adapted to engage clutch members upon the shafts A<1>, A<2>, B<2>, B<3>, so as to effect four forward speeds. For the top speed, the shafts A', A<2>, A<3> are all clutched together, all the gears turning idly. The second speed is through the gears a<2>, b2, b3, a<3>. The third speed is throngh the gears a<1>, b<1>, b<2>, a<2>. The lowest speed is through the gears a<1>, b<1>, b<3>, a<3>. Reversed driving may be obtained through idlers d', d slidable on a shaft D into mesh respectively with the gears b<2>, a<3>. The gearing is operated through a shaft R. The clutches C', C<3> are moved together by a yoke M operated by a lever K, Fig. 2, which turns about the shaft R as a pivot. The clutches C, C<2> are moved together by a yoke G operated by a lever E, Fig. 1, which is connected at its upper end to a link H. One end H' of the link H encircles an enlargement S upon the shaft R. The enlargement S and a key r slide longitudinally along with the shaft R, and subsequent turning- of the shaft R brings the selected speed &c. into operation. The key r is for this purpose adapted to engage either the lever K or a lever P, Fig. 2, for operating the idlers d', d. The part S has two parts S', S<2> having shapes designed to give the proper movements to the link H. Spring pins n, n<1> may be provided to lock the levers K, P.
