Controlling-apparatus, arrangement of hand gear in conjunction with; guarding against wrong movements. - Gear-changing mechanism comprises a shaft O<2>, Fig. 2, which is moved axially and rotated respectively for selecting and operating any particular gear, by means of a hand - lever R. The toothed wheel K and the clutch members on the lower and upper shafts are connected by forked arms respectively to the left, central, and right hand slotted plates N. To engage either of the lower gears, the striking-arm O is positioned to operate both the left hand and central members, as the wheel K must also be moved to prevent engagement of the reversing- gear, while to engage the reversing-gear or the two higher gears it is positioned to engage the left or right hand members respectively. The hand-lever is provided with an enlarged portion having lateral slots S<2> ... S<4> engaging a fixed segment T. The latter is slotted at the centre so that a different slot can only be moved into alinement with it when the lever is in its central rotary position and thus all the gears are disconnected.
