Abstract
271,674. White, A. E., (Morse Chain Co.). July 13, 1926. Variable-speed gearing comprises an auxiliary two-speed gear D arranged between the main transmission A, Fig. 1, of, say, a car, and the tail shaft 13. An eccentrically supported hollow shaft 17 carries spaced-apart external and internal gears 18, 16 which mesh constantly with an internal gear 10 fast on the driven shaft 9 of the gearing A, and with a loose, external gear 22, respectively. A double clutch sleeve 21 splined on the shaft 13 can engage a clutch member 27 on the shaft 9 for direct driving, or a clutch member 23 in the boss of the gear 22 for a geared drive, which may be higher or lower than direct. The main change-speed gear A is operated through forks 31, 32 and two selector bars 29, 30, Fig. 4, and a control lever B. The clutch sleeve 21 is adapted to be operated from the same lever B through a fork 34 and a third rod 33, Fig. 4. When the highest speed of gear A is in operation, the heel 35 of lever B is opposite a notch 37 in a head 38 fast on the bar 33. Lateral movement of lever B engages bar 33, and forward movement slides that bar to bring in the accelerating train 10, 18, 16, 22. A spring dog 39 prevents the rod 33 being operated in error.
