Abstract

265,881. Ahlm, C. E. F. Aug. 26, 1925. Controlling variablespeed gearing in an auxiliary two-speed gear upon a vehicle. As shown in Fig. 1, a splined member 11 fast on a driven shaft 3 is connected through a sleeve 7 to a toothed member 10 fast on a driving-shaft 2, yielding a direct drive. The sleeve 7 in moving to the right, passes through a neutral position, and then picks up clutch teeth 25 driven at reduced speed through a non-epicyclic eccentric train P, P<1>, P<2>. <p3> from the shaft 2. The sleeve striker fork 53 is integral with a carriage 52 slidable on a guide bar 50. A control lever 65 has a ball end 67 engaging in a head 60 slidable within the carriage 52 and normally held in mid position by two springs 63. A spring-pressed pointed plunger 34, Fig. 4, is adapted to engage the side of the carriage, which is formed with two angular recesses 55, 56 joined by a wedge point or edge 57. When the control lever 65 is actuated, one of the springs 63 and the spring 36 of the plunger 34 are compressed. When the wedge edge 57 passes under the plunger edge, these springs expand and shoot the carriage over, carrying the sleeve 7 to its extreme or gear position. It is thus impossible to leave the twospeed gear in undesired neutral. To facilitate the shifting of the sleeve 7, the ends of the teeth of the clutch ring 25 are preferably staggered, alternate teeth projecting, as shown in Fig. 2, and alternate teeth of the shifted ring of clutch teeth 8 upon the sleeve are omitted.
