390,638. Change-speed clutches. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES., Untert³rkheim, Stuttgart, Germany. April 4, 1932, No. 9590. Convention date, April 4, 1931. [Class 80 (ii).] In gear-control mechanism for power driven vehicles having an alternate clutch arrangement 14, 15, actuated by a lever 16 which is in turn displaced by a second lever 24 actuated by the driver, the lever 16 has a cam track 28 on which a roller 27 on the lever 24 travels, either the cam track or the roller being yieldingly mounted on its lever so that the levers are mutally urged to their end positions. The clutches 14, 15 have bevelled teeth so that they engage noiselessly when their peripheral velocities become equal. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the roller 27 is connected to a piston 25 which slides in the hollow lever member 24 under the influence of a spring 26, and the cam track 28 is integrally formed on the lever 16, which has adjustable stops 31. The clutch 14 connects a shaft 10 journaled in the driving shaft 1 and having fixed to it a toothed wheel 9, with a hollow shaft 11 on which are slidably keyed gears 12, 13. The clutch 15 connects a shaft 5 having a wheel 8 permanently meshing with the wheel 9, with a hollow shaft 4 to which are fixed gears 3, 6, 7, the gear 3 permanently meshing with a gear 2 on the driving shaft. The gears 12, 13 are operated by strikers connected to two sleeves 19, axially slidable by means of the driver's lever 17. A third sleeve 21 has a projection engaging a fork on the lever 24. The direct drive is obtained by the engagement of a clutch connecting gears 2, 12. The sleeves are so arranged that it is impossible to operate the over-drive through gears 2, 3, 8, 9 until the direct drive has been put in. The lever 24 may be actuated by a separate control lever which operates the sleeve 21 only or which is directly connected to the lever 24, or the lever 24 itself may be used as the control lever.
