Abstract

696,061. Change-speed gearing. BUTTERWORTH, A. J. Dec. 6, 1950 [Sept. 6, 1949], No. 23019/49. Class 80 (ii). Control means for motor-vehicle change-speed gearing comprises two pedals 20, 21, each connected to the engine clutch 1 and each carrying a pawl 22 or 23 co-operating with ratchet teeth on opposite sides of a slidable gear-changing bar 19. Depression of pedal 20 (or 21) first disengages the clutch 1 and then slides the bar 19 to change the gear one step downwards (or upwards), the clutch 1 being re-engaged on the return movement of the pedal, at the end of which movement the pawl rests clear of the ratchet teeth on a fixed part 24. As shown, gears 8, loose on a shaft 4 in splined connection with the hub 2 of the driven member of the clutch 1, are in constant mesh with gears 14 fixed on a shaft 13 which is geared to or may constitute the output member, the shaft 4 being connected by a lever 18 to the bar 19 so that, as the latter is operated, shaft 4 is moved longitudinally to bring clutch teeth 6 thereon successively into engagement with teeth in the gears 8. The latter are spaced by rings 10 or ball thrust races recessed into the gears. An oil tube 17 extends into a bore in the shaft 4 sufficiently far as to feed oil thereto in all positions of the shaft.
