Abstract

884,413. Outboard motors. COVENTRY CLIMAX ENGINES Ltd. June 24, 1960 [Sept. 11, 1959], No. 31100/59. Class 114. [Also in Group XXIV] In a reverse gear for a marine outboard motor wherein a vertical driving shaft 3 is selectively clutched at 23 or 24 to ahead or astern bevel pinions 10, 16 freely carried by the shaft 3 and which mesh a bevel pinion 8 fast with an output shaft 7, ratchet clutches 23, 24 are engaged manually and held in engagement by springs 37, 38 to permit overrun of the output shaft. Axial clutch engaging movement of an axially double clutch member 22 splined on the shaft 3, is effected by a manual control, Fig. 1 (not shown), which through a rod 29, pivots at 31 a bell-crank 30, clockwise movement of the latter acts through a rod 33 and lever 34 to compress the spring 38 which acts through a rod 27 and selector fork 26 to engage the astern clutch 24, whilst anticlockwise movement of the bell-crank compresses the spring 37 and engages the ahead clutch 23. The bell-crank 30 is retained in the selected ratio position by a spring pressed detent 45. The compression of the springs 37, 38 may be adjusted by nuts 41. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the lever is pivoted to the shaft 27 which transmits movement to the selector fork through springs.
