Abstract

653,865. Turning-gear. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. July 9, 1948, No. 18510. Convention date, Aug. 8, 1947. [Class 7(v)] In an engine starter comprising an inertia: member, such as a flywheel 34, a starter jaw member 96, means, for example a manually operated mesh rod 104, for engaging the jaw member to an element 102 of the engine to be started, transmission means including a gear train comprising gears 38, 42, 48, 50, 52, 62 and 64, connected between the flywheel 34 and the jaw member 96, torque limiting means. such as a multiplate clutch 80, connected between the jaw member and the gear train, and driving means, for example bevel gears 70 and 72, for the flywheel having a driving connection with the transmission means on the flywheel side of the torque limiting means, there is provided a second torque limiting means, such as a multiplate clutch 86 connected between the driving means 70 and 72 and its driving connection with the transmission. When member 78 is turned by hand or other means the rotation is transmitted through bevel gears 72 and 70, sleeve 54, clutches 86 and 80, barrel 58 the gear train comprising planet gears 62, stationary orbital and rotatable sun gears 64 and 52, respectively, rotatable orbital gear 50. pinion 48, bell gear 42, pinion 38 and shaft 36 to fly-wheel 34. When the fly-wheel has attained sufficient speed, a spring-loaded lever is operated to axially move the mesh rod 104 thereby causing a shoulder 106 on the latter to move a screw shaft 94 and the jaw member 96 to the left, through spring 120, to engage the engine element 102, whereupon the energy stored in the flywheel cranks the engine. If the turning moment applied to member 78 is excessive then clutch 86 slips but if the torque required to crank the engine is too great or if the engine backfires, then clutch 80 slips. The driven plates of clutch 80 are splined to a stationary nut 84 into which the screw shaft 94 is threaded, the latter being splined to the jaw member 96 whilst the driving plates of clutch 86 are splined to the sleeve 54. A sealing ring 122 attached to the front of the starter housing 12 is disposed around the shank of jaw member 96. If the spring-loaded lever is released when the engine starts the member 102 will override member 96 until the lever is released and its spring returns the parts to the position shown. The clutches 80 and 86 are combined to form a multipart clutch.
