[Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter in which a pinion b is displaced axially by hand into engagement with an engine gear t and is coupled to the starter shaft f by a multiple-disc clutch g tightened automatically by a torque-responsive pressure member d, an abutment n for the clutch discs is connected to the pinion b and acts on the clutch discs g only after a certain forward movement of the pinion has taken place. In one form, Fig. 1, the pinion b is integral with a hollow shaft a on which the member d is threaded at c. The member d is connected through the clutch discs g to a shell e keyed on the shaft f of an electric motor or a starter flywheel. The clutch discs are retained by a stop ring k on the shell, and a weak spring o is interposed between the abutment n and a pressure plate m. The outermost clutch discs have projections h, and a compression spring i between these discs normally releases the clutch. When the pinion b is moved by a hand lever s into mesh with the engine gear t, the abutment n engages the pressure plate m and brings the clutch into engagement on the compression of the spring i. The clutch is then automatically tightened by the action of the threaded connection c upon the member d. In a modification, Fig. 3, the shaft w of the pinion b engages a bore v in the shaft a and has pins y movable in inclined slots x in the wall of the bore, a spring z being interposed between the shaft w and the end of the bore. If the teeth of the pinion clash with those of the engine member t, the spring z is compressed and the pinion is turned into meshing position by the interengaging pins and slots.
