[Class 7 (v)] [Also in Group XXIV] In an engine starter in which a toothed clutch member h is axially displaceable into engagement with a clutch member p on the engine shaft, a member q is adapted to turn the clutch member h relatively to its driving member b' to prevent clashing of the clutch teeth. As shown, the member h has splines i engaging with angular play in grooves d in the sleeve b<1>, which is moved axially by a fluidpressure piston b and is threaded in a fixed member f to convert the axial movement into rotation. The play in the grooves d is normally taken up by plate springs m, Figs 2 and 3. In operation, the clutch member h is moved axially by a rod t engaged by a lever u actuated by an electro-magnet w on closing a switch 10. If the teeth of the clutch members h, p are in line, a stud n on the member h rides over the inclined end ql of an arm q on the member p and turns. the member h into meshing position: When the clutches are in mesh, an arm y on the lever u closes a switch z in the ignition circuit of an explosive cartridge in the chamber 12, whereby the piston b of the starter is actuated. In a modification, the splines i are replaced by a screw thread and the clutch teeth are inclined to the axis.
