Abstract

551,073. Turning-gear. SCINTILLA, Ltd. Feb. 11, 1942, No. 1815. Convention date, April 10, 1941. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter having a pinion 58 displaceable axially into mesh with an engine gear 76, the pinion is driven from the shaft 4 of the starting motor through a multi-plate clutch 6, a roller ratchet clutch 43 and a sleeve 37 in threaded engagement with a sleeve 54 in which the shaft 57 of the pinion is splined. Axial movement of the pinion is effected by the core 20 of an electromagnet 19, which switches on the motor by means of resiliently mounted contacts 24, 25 when the pinion is in mesh with the gear 76. The screwthreaded connection between sleeves 37, 54 turns the pinion into meshing position if the teeth of the pinion 58 and gear 76 clash, and also serves to effect the movement into full mesh when the electromagnet has effected partial engagement and switched on the motor. As shown, the pinion 58 and shaft 57 are supported between a nut 61 and a shoulder 66 on a spindle 60 integral at 63 with the sleeve 54, a spring 65 normally holding the pinion against the nut 61. The sleeve 37 and an abutting sleeve 38 have very limited axial'movement in the hollow armature shaft 4, a spring 69 being interposed between the sleeve 38 and a shoulder 72 on the stem 67 of the sleeve 54. Axial movement of the pinion is effected by the abutment of the stem 71 of the core 20 against the end of the stem 67.
