Abstract

418,044. Starting prime movers. BOSCH AKT.-GES., R., 4, Militõrstrasse, Stuttgart, Germany. Sept. 18, 1933, No. 25740. Convention date, Oct. 8, 1932. [Class 38 (iv).] In an engine starter in which a pinion 13 screws along a threaded sleeve 2 driven from the shaft 1 of the starting motor 23 through a friction clutch 3, means is provided for effecting a light clutching action between the shaft and the sleeve until the pinion is fully in mesh with teeth on the engine flywheel 14, and for effecting a heavier clutching action for starting only when the pinion is fully in mesh. A rod 26 carries at its rear end an iron core 30, lying within a magnet coil 32, and a contact bridge 31 adapted to cut out a resistance 45 in series with the field 43 of the motor 23. On closing the starter switch 44, the armature shaft 1 is driven at moderate speed and drives the sleeve 2 through the flange 10 and disc 7, so that the pinion 13 moves axially on the sleeve into engagement with the flywheel 14. When the pinion comes into full mesh with the flywheel teeth, the coil 32 is switched on by a spring contact 37 engaged by a flange on the pinion 13. The coil attracts the core 30 and moves the rod 26 and sleeve 2 to the left, causing the flange 10 to compress the clutch plates 5, 8 and the bridge member 31 to cut out the series coil 45, so that full torque is transmitted from the starting motor.
