Abstract
620,784. Clutches ; gearing for stopping and starting machinery. LUCAS, Ltd., J., and PRICKETT, A. D. Dec. 16, 1946, No. 36983. [Class 80 (ii)] An axially engaged friction clutch'engaged by spring-pressure and disengaged electromagnetically has posts extending from the driving and driven members which posts slidably carry an additional part limiting the axial movement of the driving and driven members, the posts having adjustable abutments for positioning the additional part. A friction material faced driven disc 16 of the clutch is splined to the driven shaft 13 and is pressed between a first driving member 1 attached to the crankshaft 3 and a second driving member 18 by the springs 21. The member 18 is limited in its axial movement by the heads 20 of a series of posts 19, and carries an annular iron magnet armature 22 having chamfered peripheral faces 23. These faces co-act with similar faces of an annular electromagnet 6 secured to the driving member 1 by collared posts 4 having nuts 10 to adjust the relative axial positions of the members 1 and 6, against the springs 8, for wear. The clutch electromagnet winding 32 is controlled by the circuit shown in Fig. 2 in which 28 is an engine driven dynamo. On closing the ignition switch 30, current flows from a battery (not shown) to the dynamo and excites a relay 29 to close a two-way switch 31 to energise the windings 32 and release the clutch. As the engine speeds up the dynamo overcomes the battery and the clutch is progressively engaged under the action of the springs 21. At normal running speed the dynamo feeds through the cut-out and the relay remains idle, but disengagement of the clutch is produced by closure of a manual switch 33.
