[Class 80 (ii)] The engaging voltage applied to a magnetic main clutch driving a variable-speed gear as described in Specification 610,519 is reduced automatically when one or more of the lowspeed ratios is engaged, the clutch being energized by an engine-driven generator, the output of which varies with speed. The higher engine speed necessitated for engagement of the clutch in low speed is produced by the insertion of resistances in the circuit by movement of the gear lever.
