Abstract

[Also in Division H2] A torque transmitting magnetic coupling comprises a stationary exciter arranged to produce flux traversing coaxially supported rotatable driving and driven coupling members one, 3, of which is of the claw-pole type and the other, 9, of which is axially displaceable to control the magnitude of an air gap 8 in the flux path 7 between the two members. The exciter is either a D.C. supplied coil 6 or a permanent magnet attached to a housing 2, and the air gap is controlled by a pedal 31 depression of which, via a mechanism 12, slides a sleeve 18 against the action of a spring 14. In operation, gradual release of the pedal permits the spring to move the induced driven member 9, which may be of iron or iron alloy, laminated and carry a cage winding, towards the driving member 3, whereupon the driven shaft 10 accelerates until, finally, a positive drive is effected through a friction coupling 16 whose members 32, 34 are rigid with the magnetic coupling members 9, 3. The members 4, 34 form a flywheel 5.
