706,888. Friction clutches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. May 6, 1952, No. 11408/52. Class 80 (2) In an electromagnetic multiplate friction clutch, the coil 33 is disposed between flanges 35, 37 of a stationary core 19 and is encircled by a magnetic ring 39 secured to the flange 35 and spaced from the flange 37 by a radial gap 41. An armature ring 43, secured through a disc 47 to a sleeve 45, is movable longitudinally in the gap 41, being spaced both from the ring 39 and from the flange 37. On energization of the magnet, the sleeve 45 moves to the right and, through a thrust bearing 55, moves a presser plate 51 to engage the clutch plates 29 which are splined alternately on a driven shaft 21 and in a drum 11 geared to a driving shaft 3. A second similar clutch is provided on the left of the one shown.
