Abstract

878,273. Friction clutches; clutch-brake combinations. FERRANTI Ltd. Sept. 3, 1958 [Sept. 7, 1957], No. 28309/57. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] In an electromagnetic friction clutch or brake a driven or braked thin, flexible, steel disc 11 is normally held in light but ineffective contact with pole faces 18, 19 of a laminated driving or stationary magnet 16 by pressure of springs 29 on a co-operating laminated armature 23, whereby when, for engagement, the magnet 16 is energized by a winding 17, no initial air gap has to be overcome and full torque is developed very quickly. The armature laminations 23 are carried in a plate 24 which slides axially on studs 27 on one part 21 of a two-part driving or stationary shell 14, 21 bolted together at 20. The driven disc 11 may be splined on its shaft. In a combined clutch and brake on a common driven shaft of a computor tape reader capstan, the light opposing drag torques of the disengaged clutch and brake counterbalance.
