Abstract

966,750. Friction clutches. A. N. CLARK. Sept. 25, 1961 [Aug. 24, 1960], No. 29241/60. Heading F2C. [Also in Division H1] In an electro-magnetic clutch, a coupling ring 3 of magnetic material, slidably keyed by teeth 6a, 6b within a driving or driven non-magnetic member 1, is engaged through a friction ring 7 with a driven or driving magnetic material member 2 by energizing a coil 5 located on a magnetic material spool 4 within the coupling ring 3 and member 2, the friction ring 7 being mounted between opposed stepped facial recesses on the ring 3 and member 2 which together form a narrow annular air gap at 8, restricting and concentrating the flux path (Fig. 2, not shown). The friction ring 7 may be riveted or adhered to either ring 2 or member 3 or may be free, and a rubber ring 15 housed within a groove 16 in the teeth 6a, lightly engages the teeth 6b in the member 1 to prevent rattle.
