Abstract

897,055. Friction clutches. ORTLING- HAUS, A., and ORTLINGHAUS, F. July, 10, 1958, No. 22110/58. Class 80 (2). In an electromagnetic friction clutch multidiscs 8 splined alternatively to clutch members 5, 10 are compressed against a back-plate 6 by a stationary electromagnet 1 having radiallyspaced poles from which the flux passes axially through the back-plate 6, clutch pack 8 and an axially-displaceable armature 11, the flux path including annular air gaps between the magnet 1 and back-plate 6 maintained constant independent of plate wear by a ball thrust bearing. A non-magnetic insert 7 in the back-plate directs the flux path. A needle roller bearing supports the magnet 1 on the clutch member 5. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the back-plate 7 is surrounded by a flange on the magnet body 1 so that one air gap is cylindrical. Two ballbearings replace the needle and thrust bearing and the back-plate 6 is slightly inclined when disengaged to facilitate disengagement.
