Abstract

726,487. Friction clutches. WARNER ELECTRIC BRAKE AND CLUTCH CO. July 7, 1953, No. 18798/53. Class 80 (2). An electromagnetic clutch comprises an inner pole ring 18 rigid with a sleeve 25 secured to a driven shaft 27, an outer pole ring 17 secured to the ring 18 by a non-magnetic disc 16 and a friction disc 21, and a disc armature 10 which is splined on a member 13 secured to the driving shaft 15 and which is attracted into frictional engagement with the disc 21 upon energization of a winding 12 located in a member 30 between outer and inner pole rings 31, 32 within which the rings 17, 18 are telescoped so as to form narrow annular air gaps 40, 41. The member 30 is prevented from rotating by a fixed stop 37 engaging an abutment 36 thereon, but is supported both radially and axially solely by the sleeve 25 through a bush 28 pressed in the member 30. The ring 18 may be telescoped in an annular groove in the ring 32.
